STI 14 Sep (Bullish)

It has been sometime since my last posting. Things are getting rosier as our country continues to post strong economic data which apparently STI was not being jeopardized by regional bourses. It has crossed key resistance levels (3044) signalling the start of a bull market. As long it maintains above 3044, It could even test the 23.6% mark of fibonacci (Around 3,200). However, It is being severly overbought (bluechips) and may have a slight correction prior to the next run as long as it trades above the 3,000 mark.

Tougher rules for buying second homes
Singapore announced on Monday restrictions on people buying second homes as part of new measures to cool its red-hot residential market, joining Hong Kong and China in taking steps to keep a lid on housing prices.
Property developers were in for a rude shock which sent their stock prices declined as much as 2-4%.
Southeast Asia's second-largest developer City Developments falling as much as 4.3 per cent and Wing Tai dropping as much as 4.6 per cent.
CapitaLand, Southeast Asia's largest developer, declined as much as 2 per cent
Another concern is that Singapore interest rates are near record lows despite economic growth that will likely hit 12-15 per cent this year, due to an increase in inflows from overseas.
The current low global interest rate environment will not continue indefinitely, and higher interest rates could have severe implications for buyers who have overextended themselves and on the economy.

STI - Inverse head & shoulder

STI has managed to cross the critical 3,000 mark and must maintain above this level for further upside. Bluechips has made their run this week signalling the Mid/Small Cap counters to follow through. Best performers are property and shipping related counters, (apart from purchases made by Kestral Capital> An inverse head & shoulder has formed prompting more upside potential.

STI 20 July - Head & Shoulder formation?

Straits Times Index has been crossing key resistance levels in my earlier posts to reach 2954 (recent high) at 23.6%. (who says it's bearish then??)
Confidence among investors has returned with Singapore posting GDP growth above expectations and good Q2 earnings for companies. Despite recent noises from US, Europe and China.
Looking forward, it has formed the right shoulder which means possible reversal unless it can cross the 3,000 mark and exceed beyond previous high of 3,300...
Neckline at around 2,800 points.
Trade with care. Pyramid trading rule applies.. i.e. buy less when the price is high.
Disclaimer applies.

DJ MARKET TALK: STI +1.0%; Gains May Be Short-Lived - Trader
Singapore shares stage broad-based advance following Wall Street's rally, with STI gapping up at open, last +1.0% at 2889.94. If benchmark able to clear 2900, next resistance expected at 2959 (May 4 high). Market breadth at 9 gainers for every decliner. "The gains are nowhere near Wall Street's. This could mean just a knee-jerk reaction and the current rise may be short-lived. Better make the most of it while it lasts," says trader at local brokerage. As expected, usual cyclical stocks among best performers for STI components, with NOL (N03.SG) +2.1% at S$1.96, Noble Group (N21.SG) +1.8% at S$1.71, SembMarine (S51.SG) +1.6% at S$3.87. Lower liners also making headway, with FTSE ST Small Cap Index +1.4%.

Spare A Minute...Property Related Counters
"PROPERTY PRICES CONTINUE skywards in Singapore and on Sentosa" has appeared in the headlines recently. As much as the recent hype on the Gulf Oil Spill that has been tormenting our Oil & Gas counters, Property counters and REITs has been 'consolidating' with low volume. Here's a report:
On Jul 1, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) released the flash estimates of the property price index (PPI) for 2Q10 which indicated that property prices are above their 1996 peaks.
Citi is expecting rental and resale prices in in the mass-market segment to rise by another 5–10%, but warns that policy risk remains in this segment.
Citi is recommending the low-risk S-REITs over developers “given the increasingly unfavourable risk/reward ratio”. Among the developers, its top pick for the sector is CapitaLand for its attractive valuation and diversified portfolio followed by hold recommendations for CapitaMalls Asia and Keppel Land because of their limited exposure to Singapore residential property. Citi has sells on City Developments and Allgreen Properties which are skewed towards residential segment.
It likes the REITs most, and its favourites are Ascendas REIT, CapitaCommercial Trust, Suntec REIT and Mapletree Logistics Trust.
CIMB favours the office segment and its top pick is Keppel Land. According DTZ estimates, office rents bottomed in 2Q10 after having fallen 50–60% from the peak in 3Q08. Prime offices in Raffles Place led the turnaround in rents with a 1.3% increase quarter-on-quarter to $7.90 per sq ft per month. Cheng Siow Ying, DTZ’s Executive Director (Business Space) says in a report dated June 29: “Due to the strong economic recovery, a large number of new leases signed in the first half of the year involved companies taking up expansion space. We see broad based recovery in demand from all business sectors led by banks and financial institutions.”

The STI at 2856 remains relatively resilient, in view of weakness by both the Dow and the Shanghai Composite Index. Although short-term indicators such as five-day stochastics are falling, and medium-term indicators such as quarterly momentum are lacklustre, the STI’s long-term indicators appear to be gradually strengthening, in particular, the important two-year indicator. Meanwhile, annual momentum has bounced off support and is recovering. The index is therefore unlikely to break below the May low of 2,650. InsteadIEW, it should stay within a trading range. The 50-day and 100-day moving averages are at 2,844 and 2,837 respectively. The game changer would be a convincing break above these levels, but that too is unlikely.

Asia Slides, Shanghai Hits 14-Month Low
The Chinese stock market led the region lower, hitting a 14-month low, as tight liquidity in the local market forced investors to sell to make room for Agricultural Bank of China's initial public offering, potentially the world's largest IPO to date.
The key Shanghai Composite Index [CN;SHI 2427.052 -108.226 (-4.27%)]sank 4.3 percent to 2,427.1 points, its lowest close since April 2009.
The index, one of the world's worst performers, is down about 22 percent so far this quarter and 26 percent for the year.
Institutions will start subscribing to the Shanghai portion of AgBank's dual Shanghai-Hong Kong IPO on Thursday, while retail subscriptions are scheduled for early next week.
Analysts are forecasting AgBank's Shanghai IPO will attract subscription funds of 2 trillion to 3 trillion yuan ($294-441 billion), worsening a shortfall of funds in China's money market.

STI gapped up in the morning at 2862.77 above 2856 and made a bullrun of 50+ points towards the end of the day. Next resistance is 2890 and be cautious if it trades at 2,950 (neckline). STI 04 June (Follow up posting)

STI was losing 0.3% at mid day when it rebounded, tested 2,800 and closed high at 2806.51, a good sign that the road to recovery (short term) is imminent following a double bottom formation. Shares are showing triangle patterns which means short term outbreak is possible after last week's major retracement.

STI 03 June (possible reversal)

STI climbed 2.4% to 2,793.34 with high volume which is a good sign that market has stabilised for now. Buying Momentum is good today which is expected to carry through the next few days. Bargain hunters who has loaded last week are seeing substantial returns just as the market has flushed out contra and weak punters. Therefore rule of thumb applies to holding power in a bearish market.
Alot of people debated on the recovery of STI in the midst of the crisis but today STI was testing 2,800 resistance and well above 200 MA at 2,784. A double bottom has formed instead of pennent..
Top performers among STI components include Noble Group (N21.SG), +4% at $1.82, NOL (N03.SG), +3.8% at $1.90, UOB (U11.SG), +3.3% at $19.06, OCBC (O39.SG), +3.4% at $8.53.

Fears that Europe's banking problems and North Korea's threats of military action against South Korea could derail the economic recovery
Dow Jones managed to claw back from -300 points to -20points yesterday despite the mentioned news. However, Market volatility (VIX) has hit a high of 43.64 before close at 34.61, which means Hell broke loose in all markets very similar to the sub-prime crisis, where choppy trades and waves of news surround the Wall street.
Bearish in STI as it has been trading below 200 MA. today's rebound is expected since the index was oversold at -3% yesterday. Long term investors will bargain hunt due to the recent strong earning and economic results. The spate of events did not deter them from buying, especially shipping counters when Baltic Dry Index was up 6.7% today, casting a positive outlook in the forthcoming months.
Trade with Care.

US STOCKS MAKE A COMEBACK - END POSITIVE (CNBC)
The euro was around $1.24 against the dollar, after earlier hitting a four-year low against the U.S. currency.
DOW JONES - "What happens late in the trading day is the professionals come in and figure out what to do based on where the market is. And to my eye, the professionals came in and said, 'This market's on sale. And the economy is not going to the wrecker again, and so it's time to buy," Stuart Schweitzer, global markets strategist at JPMorgan Private Bank, said on CNBC - DO YOU BUY???
It has been a roller-coaster ride for investors from the sell-down yesterday and prices are really attractive as bluechips are trading at their support.
The closing price for STI will determine the formation of chart pattern - Pennant or double bottom?? over the next few days to analyse short term outlook.
Watch for the key levels for STI as posted earlier.
Trade with care.

STI testing first resistance of 2856 - Reversal?
As of 250pm, STI has reached intraday peak of 2855 with bluechips leading the pack. Waves of buying continues as European markets are opening.
Reversal could only be possible if it could hold above this level till end of the day. Bargain hunting begins.
Trade with care. Do not catch a falling knife or "bull trapped".

EU agrees bumper eurozone aid deal - Uptrend?
STI gapped up in the morning with the news being announced.
1) Euro has went up against the US dollar signalling the positive sentiments in the European Markets later.
2) Futures are up.
3) Dow Jones may recover from Friday's losses
As such, the upside movement may continue signalling a reversal. But, watch the key levels of STI as posted earlier.
The financial markets generally are unpredictable. So that one has to have different scenarios... The idea that you can actually predict what's going to happen contradicts my way of looking at the market.

STI rebounded from -60 to -24 in the morning. Licking it's wounds from the fanatic sell down.
Sentiments still bearish but it will rebound from today's low to the 2856 resistance for the next 2 days before continuing the downtrend.
Volatility is at it's peak and be cautious on the reversal if you have loaded today. Lower your expectations and book your profit once you know it's going down.

The Boy who cried Wolf the fourth time..

STI has traded below three key support levels from the recent peak of 3032 with HIGH VOLUME.
1) 2949
2) 2897
3) 2856 - (6 May closing price 2839.65)
Moving average 14 & 25 has a crossover as of 5 May. (downtrend) and STI is trading dangerously below 50 MA line.
All these happened within 4 market days with 145 points loss from the 30th April peak of 2984. Unbelievable.
As I have said, stay away from the Bull-Trap and I'm expecting a rebound as soon as these 2 days from the panic selling and then continues it's downslide. Let's observe the movement and will keep you posted.
The boy who cried wolf the fourth time.. what will you do? It may be a BULL afterall.
Nevertheless, opportunities lurk in the deep waters where we could load them at a bargain. Will be updating soon

Bull Trap
Investopedia explains Bull Trap
A bull trap often causes some investors to buy the stock, but because the stock continues to decline after the initial signal, those who bought in are "trapped" in a bad investment.
STI has retraced 3% for the past 2 days and Europe is still declining on the fear of Greece bailout. Many counters including the index have declined below their support level (2957 STI). STI further reacted to the US when Dow gave away 200 points in the early hours of trading but rebounded in the afternoon 2 - 3pm due to Shanghai's positive performance.. Waves of buying occured during this period and finally surrendered at the end of the day.. Are you bull-trapped?
The boy who cried wolf for the third time is real for now.
Stay away as counters are testing their critical support levels using TA.. When dividends and earnings reports are due to over in May, what's next? Buy or short? When?
Will be updating soon.

STI Outlook

Bullish - STi has been trading on the uptrend since Feb 2010 and is still trading healthily above 50 MA line. Support at 2952 and resistance at 2987 for further upside.
As in my earlier blog, it has been testing 3,000 mark. With the recent "noises" from reports, news etc, market adopted a knee-jerk reaction and traded dangerously below the STI support on 28 April due to panic selling. Result, weak hands sold cheap shares to strong hands and they are laughing to bank now with 5% or more returns within 2 days..
Another episode of Dubai and euro crisis. Meanwhile these are being swept under the carpet, adopt a cautious and calm mindset based on buying low and selling high methodology in trading. The boy who cried wolf..2 times were false alarm but the 3rd..

Would you long or short yesterday?
As I have posted yesterday and during some coffee talk, STI gapped down yesterday and rebounded slightly until the bloodbath at the last hour of trading.. losing 59 pts 2%
The damage has been done.. did the fire really broke out?
Alot of shortists were stuck yesterday and whoever did it were in for a shock this morning as the counters rebounded (CFDs). Who is really buying?? Greece issues were presented so drastic that the fear was felt at the last hour. who is buying when the retail investors are throwing their shares at their loss? If you have loaded. Congratulations.
Trade with care.

Asia bourses weighted heavily on the forthcoming reports on Greece debt restructuring program which has caused jittery among investors. S&P downgrading of portugal has led Dow Jones to a loss of 100 points in the early hours of trading admist the reports on positive earnings and consumer confidence.
STI index is still flirting on the 3,000 benchmark despite positive reports on earnings and dividends. Bluechips took the lead meanwhile Mid and small cap stocks are showing signs of exhaustion. Market is digesting these news and have caused widespread selldown and shorting on trending counters ever since conquered their all new-year high benchmarks and are slowly retracing.. where opportunities lurked in most counters trading at their support.
Remember, If someone shouted 'fire', what would be your first reaction?
Updates on counters will be coming soon.

Why Marine Stocks run despite market selldown
My take: with the recent spate of earnings posted + Volcanic ashes which crippled all air frieght + high oil prices = increased in shipping activities :)
Yangzijiang eyes PPL
Yangzijiang Shipbuilders, together with its non-executive director Yu Kebing and an unnamed Middle East investor, have offered to buy Singapore-based PPL Holdings for US$155 million ($213.2 million), the company said on Saturday.
When the deal is completed, Yangzijiang will own 50.1 per cent of PPL Holdings, while the Middle East investor and Mr Yu will hold 45 per cent and 4.9 per cent respectively. PPL Holdings is currently owned by mainboard-listed Baker Technology. To fund its acquisition of a 50.1-per-cent stake, Yangzijiang said it will issue some 83.6 million new shares at $1.295 each to the Middle East investor to raise the equivalent of about US$77.7 million.
PPL Holdings now owns a 15 per cent stake in PPL Shipyard, which designs and constructs shallow- and deep-water offshore drilling rigs. The remaining 85 per cent of PPL Shipyard is owned by Sembcorp Marine. JO-ANN HUANG

After the selldown on wallstreet due to charges to Goldman Sach, It has prompted this question "is this the correction" as players have booked their profit on the recent bullrun. Furthermore, crisis falls on the airlines across the globe as Europe shut their airspace from the volcanic ashes costing hundreds of millions each day...
Therefore it is normal for panic investors to unload their shares and shortists will be active in the first hours of trading.. Which side of the coin will you choose?
I will be posting on the updates soon.

Radar 12 April 10

Dow Jones has closed 70 points above previous high on friday and has been flirting with the 11,000 mark. With the upcoming week of earning postings, we have seen STI merely closed 8 points above with only Middle and Small Cap stocks showing significant movement. Large Cap stocks should be moving this week as companies are posting their results. Nevertheless, the penny counters will continue their momentum till the market rotates to the blue chips. Traders please beware of your positions if you have loaded penny counters which probably you do not favour long term strategy. Enjoy the ride.

Good start for April 10
Today marks a good start for April with index gaining 50 pts and
counters closing high after breakout- nol :). We should see it gapping
up on mon if Dow closed on a positive note. As I posted earlier, STI
will test the 2947 mark which will mark a new beginning close to pre
crisis level:) profit taking is imminent Monday but watch as the waves
will start again.. Enjoy the ride .. For now

STI staged a reversal after yesterday's losses and despite DOW jones losing 50 points.
"Asian stock markets shrugged off the negative finish on Wall Street, making modest gains on Thursday"
NOL in particular broke the R 2.03 and thrusted to 2.09 in the first 30 mins. Seems like ship building and logistics are showing movement in view of falling currencies. except cosco :). Potential stocks are YZJ as volume accumulation is at 1.18. R1.20. Penny counters had their fair share of gains and are showing signs of exhaustion. But will continue the trend soon. C&O pharm, Hengxin, XLX, Osim, etc.. See how the asian bourses fare in the afternoon.. Cheers

STI
Today is another Positive day with STI near all year high. Stocks that
broke out are mostly penny counters and commodity counters. Blue chips
are showing resilence to selldown. Spectacular gains for hengxin and
xlx- don't even know what they are doing :). Prepare for the finale in
march as it may rally once it break the 2947 mark...
